The passion for public service

I decided to enter Public Administration in 2017. At that time, I worked at INE, the National Statistics Institute. It is a public service in charge of creating the official statistics of Chile. In the beginning, it was just one more job for me. An opportunity to have a job and spend my free time. Because of course, since I had dropped out of the university a few years ago, I was always looking for any opportunity to earn money, and then escape to discover the country. They were my days of “a day worked… for a day traveled”.

In my first job at INE, I was accepted as a supervisor. It was a good experience, because I had so many different things to do. Later, I have better jobs even more interesting, for example, of coordination of equipment and logistics for the entire province. I started with a job for three months, and I was linked to the INE for two years.

It was then that I discovered the sense of “the public” and the passion for public service. Because public service is not just working in a boring office. Public service is knowing the territory, talking to people, listening to their claims and their needs. Public service is also worrying about the quality of work ... and of course, a great opportunity to make good friends.

And the program has been excellent for me... :) Now I understand public problems from another perspective. In the future, I will have tools to analyze and understand how to face social problems, such as structural poverty or corruption in the public sector.

I think it is surprising that you have worked at the INE and I think ordinary people don't understand how important the role of public servants is.
